My Experience at Class. Where the Masters Teach
As a makeup artist, I always strive to be better than I was the day before. To do that, I must continually learn new techniques, remain current on the latest trends, and invest in quality education.
Let’s look at that key word: invest. Webster dictionary defines invest as “to commit (money) in order to earn a financial return.” In this case, my financial return comes from the clients who hire me to provide knowledgeable, skillful, and professional services. With so many folks claiming to be makeup artists and everyone and their mother is teaching all kinds of makeup classes, it’s sometimes hard to weed through the flakes to get to the real educators. I don’t know about y’all but I hold my coins a/k/a money real tight when it comes to investing in my business.
I recently had the opportunity to be a part of something so special, so unique, and so rewarding. I’m talking about Class. Where the Masters Teach presented by Erica Carr. What is this Class, you may ask? Class, is a 5-day intensive hands-on experience where you are learning from 20 of the top leading professionals in the beauty industry. Held in Portland, Oregon, Class is attended by professional makeup artists from literally around the globe who want to take their artistry to the next level and grow their beauty businesses. Now, I’ll be first to admit, the price tag was steep. And I had no idea how I was going to find my way there. Boy am I glad things worked out in my favor to attend this epic event. It was so worth it!!
Have you ever been to a workshop where there’s multiple awesome speakers, usually at the same time, and you have to pick and choose who you’re going to see or even worst try to split your time between all of them? Well, not with Class. At Class, you get to rotate through three speakers per day and then we were given 2 hours at the end of the day to put into practice all we had learned. OMG, so let me tell you, when you’re in the presence of such people as Reggie Wells, whose career spans 45 years and his hands have graced the faces of Whitney Houston, Halle Berry, Beyoncé Knowles and Oprah Winfrey; to Gregory Arlt, who with 20+ years of experience, has beautified celebrities such as Gwen Stefani, Katy Perry, Dita Von Teese and Cher; to Sam Fine who is the “authority” on makeup for women of color – you can’t help but to soak up as much knowledge as you can from them.
Did I say there were 20 of the top celebrity makeup artist from around the world…? We learned some of their secret techniques, their favorite products, and even got to ask any questions we wanted. All of the artist were forthcoming, open, helpful, and more than willing to assist during the hands-on session to walk you through a techniques step-by-step.
Out of everything I learned during those 5-days my biggest take away were the relationships I formed with my fellow makeup artists. A lot of us were only friends via Facebook or other social media apps, but the bonds that were created were well worth the trip! I met so many individuals who share a common passion, desire and love of makeup artistry – and I now call them friends. Artists who want to elevate their artistry and make a mark in this industry. If you’re a makeup artist and want to “invest” in quality education and in yourself, I highly recommend attending Class. You won’t be disappointed.
